Tap. Tap. Tap. The pen the young Dhampir held in between his right thumb and index finger continued to tap on the desk he now sat at, in a repetitive motion. The movement relaxed him and helped him concentrate. He was reading over a text he had been given during his last class, Moroi Culture. It was a compulsory subject that every student had to take whether they wanted to or not, and also a subject that didn't bore the Guardian in training to death, though it was definitely no where near as appealing as his Dhampir classes were. For him the classes Novices were able to take, beat all Moroi classes by miles. They made them seem dull in comparison, but Dante could admit that some of them were ok.
The classroom the Junior currently sat in was completely vacant. Other than him and his tapping pen, no one else was in sight. He had been given permission to stay behind, and use the classroom as a study space until the cleaners came, or he was done. He needed to catch up in certain areas because he had missed a few classes over the last couple of weeks, due to the fact that he and a few other Novices in his grade, had been selected to mentor Freshmen Novices in one of their first major assignments. Looking back at the events of the last couple weeks made the boy realize how glad he was to of already gone through the tasks he had seen some of the younger Dhampirs endure, attempt, complete and fail. Training to be a Guardian is not easy no matter how uncomplicated certain people made it look.
Dante sat at a desk right near one of the large windows on the right side of the room, which was also the furthest wall from the door. He had moved from his usual seat, which was right up the back in the corner of the left side of the room, and now he sat in the second row, in the chair closest to the window. His belongings laid over the table that joined the two chairs together. This was one of the class rooms where double desks forced people to sit in twos, and be sort of squished into each others personal space. Dante ran his left index finger across a line of text that he was reading in his head. His pen continued to tap along the top of the table his body rested against. The particular chapter he was now looking over was about Moroi politics. He was reading a section about an issue that was brought to the Royal Council a few years ago when Queen Tatiana was in power. It was in relation to an attack made on members of the Badica family when they had been on vacation. A few Royals had been trying to push for more Guardians to be assignend to their families. Their argument was that because they were Royal, their families were more targeted by Strigoi. They tried to convince the Queen and the Council to raise the law of Royals having two Guardians each, to three.
Dante stopped reading. He put his hands on the book, pushed it a little bit away from him, relaxed back into the chair that seated him, and shook his head. He didn't get it. He didn't get why some people felt like they were so much more important than others. How could their lives matter so much more than his own, or the lives of others? What difference did a last name make? It made him mad to know that people, no Royals, adults none the less, could think and even make enough of an issue about something, that it was allowed to even be presented to the Royal Council. It was ridiculous. He just didn't get it. If they were so worried, than how come instead of learning to defend themselves, they took the time to argue about such ridiculous 'issues'? How come they couldn't just stand up and start protecting their own? What would happen if all the Novices just quit. If they just said 'you know what I don't think I really want to be a Guardian anymore, I think I'll go live in the human world. Maybe go to high school, maybe even college... who knows.' What would happen then? Would the Royals change their views on things? Would they realize that reverting to the old ways wasn't as much of a bad idea as it was constantly made out to be? Would they stop being afraid? Dante's thoughts were interrupted. He could her noises on the other side of the door that worked as both an exit and entry to the room he was in. His grey eyes focused on it as it slowly began to open.

Adrianna had a free period and decided to catch up on some errands. She had a few books out, two to the library. They were a classic and a fiction. The fiction had been a terrible choice. What modern fiction book could compare to any of Homer's? The Odyssey was one of her favorites and she loved reading it in the spare time she had. Unfortunately she had left her copy of the book on the nightstand by her bed so she was forced to read the library's copy.
The third book she had out was a text book that belonged to one of the guardian teachers. It was a book about the ancient ways when the moroi would fight with their guardian and she had been interested in it. The guardian agreed to let her view it as long as she told no one and didn't bring it up to any adults that she was interested.
Adrianna had felt as if she had been asking him to give her drugs or something. The thought of Moiroi's using their magic to harm another human being was just unheard of, especially for a royal. It was seen as almost an abomination, but how could that be so when those things were dead? Those things wanted to kill her, kill her guardian and her family. They had already proven they were heartless, soulless so why shouldn't she want to defend herself?
Still she had merely told him she wanted to have a firmer grasp on her history so he allowed her to borrow the book. It was interesting to say the least. The moroi back then were strong, and were able to defend their guardians. Some moroi could even hold back strigoi on their own. Adrianna had been astonished, and even more sure that she had to find someone that would help her.
She walked to the classroom making sure that it was well after time for class to be over and everyone gone. She opened the doorway and slid inside. Her eyes immediately fell upon a boy sitting at a desk and looking like he would rather be anywhere in the whole world than at the desk.
Adrianna held the book tightly to her, covering the title with her arms. What in the world was someone doing in here?
" Sorry....I didnt mean to bother you..."

Dante had began to assume that the cleaners were making their rounds earlier than usual today. He was slightly surprised when the door of the classroom he sat in attempting to catch up on some work, swung open to reveal a pretty blond Moroi girl. Adrianna Dashkov was one of the last people he expected to walk through that door. The boys grey eyes stared at the young Royal from across the room where he sat in the desk that was not his own. What on earth was she doing here?
Adrianna Dashkov... was not a person Dante knew well. In fact he didn't know her at all, though like almost everyone in their world, he did know of the tragic disappearance of Adrianna's mother Lady Arabella Dashkov. Adrianna's mother had been taken by Strigoi the year before Dante's parents and sister Lia had died. It was big news in their world immediately after it had happened. Dante remembered how scared people were becoming after finding out that a Royal was taken from their own home by Strigoi. Dante also remembered seeing Adrianna around the academy with a look that resembled the one he had for a long time after the deaths of most of his family. He felt empathy toward the girl but had never expressed it as many of his peers had to her.
Adrianna was a grade above Dante. The two of them had gone to school together for a while but had never spoken. Because of the age difference between them they had no classes together. And they pretty much ran in different social circles. They had never really crossed paths till this moment. "Sorry....I didn't mean to bother you..." The future title holder said apologizing to Dante as if she was intruding upon his space. He stared at her briefly with curious eyes and thoughts. It was obvious from her tone of voice and facial expression that she had thought the room to be empty, and was not expecting him to be here studying. It was also obvious that she didn't have permission to use the room. That little fact made Dante even curiouser about her presence. It wasn't like Adrianna to break rules, well not that he knew of anyway. Most of the time Dante had seen her she was hanging out with people in the court yard, or quietly reading some large form of book somewhere by herself. He just did not peg her as a rule breaker. But he could be wrong.
The boy continued to look at the girl who stood hovering near the door she had entered through mere moments ago. He wasn't sure why she had said sorry to him. And he wasn't sure what she was doing here either, but he was going to find out. "What are you doing in here?" Blunt and straight to the point, very Dante Ricci when he was looking for a quick answer. He leaned forward on his elbows and relaxed into a slouched position. His eyes flicked to the arms of the Moroi girl. She was holding a book, but he couldn't see the cover. Perhaps she had come to study like he was trying to do. "Are you revising or something?" He questioned nodding toward the book she held close to her chest.

Adrianna's immediate thought was who is the cute guy? then when she noticed that he was Dhampir she felt the blood rush to her cheeks. There was more than one thing wrong with liking a dhampir, or at least that was what was drilled into her head. Her father had raised her with the expectations that she would marry a well off Moroi boy and have lots of little proper moroi children who they would watch their guardians die for while they sat back and did nothing. Which was exactly the sort of thing that Adri was rebelling against, or at least she had done it in her mind. Baby steps were the key...the book was baby step number two.
She had to cut herself some slack it was hard disobeying the one person you had left in the world. It was hard assuring him that you were anxious to step into the role in the council and secretly read books about fighting side by side with dhampirs. She wondered what her mother would have told her to do. Her father had never been so controlling and obsessed about keeping her safe as he was after her mother died. It was understandable of course, but Adri felt like her life had already been charted which was the stuff that nightmares were made of.
When the boy spoke she snapped back into reality. What in the world could she say. Oh I just borrowed this..Oh I found this in the hall and thought it went here....What book? Either one made her look ridiculous and like she was up to trouble. Either one of those would give her away. She clutched the book tighter to her like it was a safety blanket. The boy had asked if she was making revisions.
" I was just returning this...If you must know."
Adri tried to gather her composure. she walked over to the teacher's desk. Slipping the book inside one of the drawers. She turned back to the boy and leaned against the desk.
" What about you ? I thought this class ended a half hour ago. "
She couldn't see what he was working on, but she could see he had lots of notes scribbled and jotted down. Extra study session perhaps?
" trying to solve the world's problems? "

"I was just returning this... If you must know." The blond Moroi girl said in reference to the book she had clutched to her chest. Dante had enhanced vision just as all Dhampirs did, but he could not see the title of the book, it was moments like these that the seventeen year old wished he had x-ray vision. He watched Adrianna as she walked over to the teachers desk, opened a draw and slipped the book within it. Her movements were fast but he caught a glimpse of the title, it was a history book, or that's what the boy assumed anyway because he made out the word 'history.' Why was a Moroi girl returning a history book to a Moroi culture classroom? It did not make sense.
"What about you ? I thought this class ended a half hour ago." Really? Had it already been half an hour? Dante pulled back his left sleeve and looked at the wrist watch Ara had given him for Christmas last year. It was a digital clock, with a navy colored wrist band. She had bought it for him so he could time his training sessions. He kept misplacing the stop watches the academy provided on request for Novices, and the receptionists at the equipment office refused to let him use anymore, so his sister splurged on this gift and promised him she would strangle him if he lost it. It was his favorite present and he rarely took it off. Thank god it was also water proof or Ara would of strangled him by now.
"Tying to solve the world's problems? " Dante turned his attention back to Adrianna who now casually rested on the desk she had slipped the book into. He studied her in a quick casual manner trying to not let it be obvious that he was checking her out, though he was pretty sure she could tell. But he bet she was probably use to guys doing this, it most likely happened to her all the time. "Something like that." He said nodding toward the book he had pushed away from him, and the notes that he had been jotting down on a few of the note books around him. He knew she had already been peeking over at what he had in front of him, but there was no way she could of read any of the stuff that was there from where she was. She was probably wondering what it all was. Dante had a weird system but it worked for him.
"I was just reading about a law proposition that was presented to the Royal Council in the aftermath of the Badica holiday incident." Dante just assumed Adrianna knew what he was talking about, she was older than him and had already taken this class, plus she was Royal and everyone knew of the incident that happened a few years back... oh and there was also the fact that her father was one of the Royals who had backed the motion at the time. "And I had to take a break." He looked from the book to Adrianna. If she wanted to joke about him trying to solve the problems of the world, then she would get a good idea of just how strongly his opinions of things like Royals sacrificing more Dhampirs for no reason, were. Her father was probably also one of the ones pushing for the law to change last year about Novices graduating at sixteen and being sent out into the world unprepared for what awaited them. Dante shook his head.

Adrianna felt his eyes on her and wondered what he was thinking. Knowing Dhampirs he was probably calculating all the reasons on why she was actually here and why she was lying to him. She didn't have many dhampir friends, but the ones she did have were always " on watch". They had never relaxed..always looking for positions of possible attacks, and calculating exit strategies. She could never be that way. Adrianna's head was too far in the clouds to be that direct and always on target.
Adrianna was surprised when he mentioned the subject of his studies. Once again for the second time since she had met the Dhampir boy she felt the blood rush to her cheeks. The subject of law matters always made Adrianna want to run and hide. Her father had always voted on the most outlandish, and sometimes cruel propositions. What Adri's opinions were on the subject did not matter. Her father came from the hard background of have them die for you or watch your family die and turn into monsters. Adrianna could see why he would be so fearful, but when she had to deal with seeing the looks on her dhampir friend's faces when these things were voted on she wished she wasn't royal.
" Ah, I see. "
It was quite clear that he had a strong opinion on the matter and that her father was obviously not one of his most favorite people. She never knew what to say in these situations. There was the public face she had to keep up, she couldn't go around apologizing for her father's actions it would only get around to him and she would be sent home. Then she would never find someone to teach her to fight and she would live the rest of her life like a scared little kitten waiting for a dog to attack. Then again if she acted like it was ok then the same thing would happen, no dhampir could stand to be around her...which she couldn't blame them for, and she would never be taught. Instead she tried to relax the situation, and she smiled warily.
" So I take it you would like to offer me up as a sacrifice right now? "

"So I take it you would like to offer me up as a sacrifice right now?" It's not you I'd like to sacrifice. Dante left his thoughts in his head instead of relaying them with his voice. Almost instantly after he realized what he was thinking about he felt like a massive jerk. There was just something about Adrianna that emitted a strange sort of empathy from within him. He shouldn't of said anything about the stupid proposition in the first place. Though truth be told, Dante never really was one for sparing the feelings of others when they needed to be brought back to reality. But the boy didn't know for sure just where the young Dashkov Royal's opinions were the same as her fathers or not, though he could tell from the smile and body language that the topic definitely made her very uncomfortable.
"Sacrifices are a bit too barbaric for my liking." He joked and returned Adrianna's smile with a grin. The tension Dante had just been feeling faded and was quickly replaced with an electric curiosity. Dante had thrown a verbal grenade at Adrianna, and she had managed to doge it gracefully with sacrifice and a smile. Maybe she wasn't just another spoiled royal. She definitely was not stupid, in fact Adrianna seemed pretty smart as far as Dante could tell. He liked that... he liked that she didn't shy away from the question either. She was different, she was interesting.
Dante stared at Adrianna, this time not bothering to hide the fact that he was checking her out. She was beautiful. But she probably already knew that. "Is that your natural hair color?" The question escaped from his mouth before he even knew what he was saying. But in true Dante style instead of being embarrassed of feeling stupid like some other people would, he simply just grinned again and relaxed back into the chair by the window that he had hi-jacked. Adrianna had nice hair. Today it was down, in loose curls the way it usually was when Dante had seen her hair styled, and it was the color of sunshine. He liked it. Dante hadn't seen much daylight these days, so it was a nice little reminder.
